A while back, Microsoft announced that they were going to hire Jerry Seinfeld to be in some new ads for Microsoft. Part of it was to counter the Mac vs PC advertisements that Apple has been running. The goal of these ads is to get people to start talking again about Microsoft, and show that it was cool. Microsoft will be spending a total of $300 million on a series of these ads. Here's the first commercial that they've release:
After I watched it, I thought, wow, that was awful. It wasn't funny, and it basically said nothing about Microsoft until the end. A mall plus discount shoe store does not exactly scream cool to me. The final phrase that they end the commercial with, "The Future, Delicious", means absolutely nothing to me. I think this kind of shows that Microsoft is a bit out of touch if they thought bringing on Jerry Seinfeld was going to make them seem cool. At this point, they have a lot of headwinds to fight after a fairly disastrous release of Windows Vista, publicity wise.
Silicon Alley Insider is running an article entitled, "
Seinfeld's First Microsoft Commercial: Not Funny."
It's going to be pretty hard to dethrone Apple from the Coolness throne in my opinion at this rate.
