Here's a collection of photos from the annual Yahoo Year End Party. This was quite the experience, and possiblely the most elaborate party I've been to. Sorry for not posting pictures earlier, I still have a large backlog of photos to put up.

The event was hosted at the San Mateo Convention Center. This was an extremely large venue, and all Yahoos in the Bay Area were invited to the event. The convention center was divided into four sections. A lounge area, a card game area, a video games area, and a live band area. In each section, there were tons of food stations. My favourite, all you can eat sushi and shrimp. DROOL

As of late, I've been screening job candidates at work, and I keep coming across resumes with J2EE on them. It got me wondering what J2EE web development was like, because I heard writing a "hello world" application was horrific for it.

Myron passed along this video of a presentation made at NASA which compares a few web development frameworks.

In short, writing front-end code with J2EE really sucks. A simple form with a database backend took the developer 200+ minutes to create, and his coding involved writing half the application in Java, and the other half in XML configuration files. He had about 500 lines of code to write such a simple application.

With something like Ruby on Rails, he was able to do it in about 50 lines of code, and about 20 minutes?

I'm glad that when I was applying for jobs, I explicitly avoided Java shops.
