Here's the final results of the International Bank of Chan Fund competition which ran between September 19, 2006 to December 31, 2006. Again, everyone started with $10,000.
1st: CHaN with $10,796.03, +7.93%
2nd: Patrick with $10,697.36, +6.97%
3rd: Cwing with $10,635.74, +6.35%
4th: Myron with $10,251.17, +2.51%
5th: Robby with $10,039.60, +0.40%
The Dow Jones Industrial index was up about 8% for this time period, which means that if you bought every single stock in that index, you would have an 8% return on investment. So, I'm quite happy that I'm pretty much on par with the index. Most mutual funds use indicies as a benchmark. The goal is to always beat the market, or in this case, the index.
These returns aren't double digit gains, but it's not bad making 8% in less than 4 months. If you put your money in a high interest savings account, you'd make maybe 3.75% in a year.
The best performing stocks I had were:
Gamestop (aka EB Games): +25%
Level 3 Communications: +20%
KB Homes: +14%
Google Inc: +11%
Costco: +9%
The worst performing stocks:
Oil Service Holders: -16%
E*Trade: -10%
Qwest Communications: -10%
